LEETONIA — During council Wednesday Mayor Kevin Siembida reminded council members and residents about the need for dispatchers, part-time street workers, fire and EMS. Members for the zoning board of appeals and planning committee are also being sought out.

Councilman Neal Bayless has volunteered for the records retention commission beginning in January of next year.

“We are still short staffed, the employment that has been plaguing this country has taken its toll on the village of Leetonia,” Siembida said.

In other news, Siembida announced a successful year regarding the general funds for 2021. According to Fiscal Officer Randal Chismar the village has collected over $800,000.

“That is a record for the village of Leetonia,” Siembida remarked.

Funds collected from income taxes indicate positive economic growth in the community. Funds are still in the red regarding water and sewer however, Siembida said the funds for those departments are close to being balanced.

Also, council approved a resolution allotting a yearend bonus of $100 for city employees. Elected officials, appointed board members and hourly fire and EMS employees completing less than 12 calls between Oct. 1 2020 until September 30 2021 are excluded from the yearly bonus.

In other matters, Siembida read a letter aloud Wednesday evening advising council of Chismar’s resignation. Chismar has accepted another opportunity and was thanked by Siembida for his 11 years of service.

“You have been very helpful to me in learning the processes and stuff like that,” Siembida said.

Siembida also recognized three other council members stepping down at the end of the year.

Members included James Pittman, Neal Bayless and William Merdich.

Pittman was recognized for the amount of help with projects throughout his term. Merdich will step down after serving the village for an estimated 33 years. Merdich’s service on the Shade Tree Commission has been invaluable according to Siembida.

Bayless was recognized for his contributions modernizing the villages financial planning. Siembida described the critical impact updating the financial planning has on the village.

Lastly, the fire department is also requesting additional signage or other measures be taken to alert residents using the recycling center regarding fire trucks exiting the lot.
