The Bakersfield Condors’ 2021-22 season started close to perfect. A 5-3 win that saw the team have success at even strength and on the power play against the Abbotsford Canucks, followed by a 34-save shutout win by Stuart Skinner against the San Jose Barracuda set up the early portion of the year.
Then the recalls to the Edmonton Oilers began. Skinner was called up to replace Mike Smith on Oct. 20 and he hasn’t returned. Ryan McLeod went to Edmonton on Nov. 7, Philip Broberg and William Lagesson on Nov. 19 and Markus Niemelainen on Nov. 30. In December, Cooper Marody and Seth Griffith made the flight to Edmonton and the NHL.
Each of those recalls represents a dream come true and for some of those men this recall (or the next one) could be the one that keeps them in the NHL.
On the other hand, winning hockey games in the AHL is difficult when the starting goalie and the left side of the defence disappear on a northbound plane.
