The Detroit Red Wings played much better in the second half of Tuesday’s game in Dallas but could not overcome the three-goal deficit they faced the first half of the game.
The Stars, behind two goals and an assist from Jason Robertson and 28 saves from Jake Oettinger, defeated the Red Wings 5-2 at American Airlines Center.
Dylan Larkin scored his fifth goal in five games for the Red Wings but did not play in the third period.
Filip Zadina scored the other goal for the Red Wings (8-8-2), who have lost back-to-back games at the start of a four-game trip.
Zadina cut the Stars’ lead to 3-1 at 9:09, whipping in a hard backhand shot during a two-on-one with Sam Gagner. Ryan Suter’s centering pass in the offensive zone was picked off by Gagner, who made a quick transition.
It was Zadina’s third goal of the season and his first in nine games.
Larkin scored 13 seconds into a power play at 14:39 on a wrist shot from the face-off circle. Larkin has eight goals in 14 games this season, just one short of his total in 44 games last season.
It was Detroit’s first power-play goal in five games. Lucas Raymond (18 points) and Moritz Seider (13 points) assisted, adding to their league-leading totals among rookies.
But the momentum the Red Wings gained the second half of the second period was curbed early in the third when Robertson scored on a wraparound against Alex Nedeljkovic at 3:48 to put Dallas ahead 4-2. Nick Leddy had the puck on his stick with a chance to clear but turned it over.
Robertson capped the scoring with an empty-net goal at 18:23 as Dallas improved to 6-6-2.
Dallas threatened to run away with the game after building a 3-0 lead less than eight minutes into the second period.
The Stars outshot the Red Wings 12-4 in the first period and opened the scoring when Suter fired a shot from the high slot through traffic and past Nedeljkovic at 13:33.
Jamie Benn scored at 1:06 of the second period. He won an offensive-zone face-off from Larkin and went to the net to deflect in Miro Heiskanen’s shot from the blue line.
Roope Hintz gave Dallas a three-goal lead at 7:29 on a wrist shot from the slot. Leddy attempted to clear the puck by rimming it along the boards, but Esa Lindell kept it in and set up Hintz.
