In case you are still wondering if what veteran lefty Robbie Ray achieved during the 2021 season is legitimate, he had a nice November, too, earning the AL Cy Young award and a five-year, $115-million contract from the Seattle Mariners. Fantasy managers need to buy in, too.
Yes, Ray was terrible in the truncated 2020 season, but you must ignore that. That old Ray is never coming back (he types with fingers crossed, which, frankly, is not easy.) Just look at Ray's 2021 season. Cy Young! We believe that!
OK, so it is understandable that a fantasy manager may not want to invest a pick in the first three or four rounds on an ace pitcher who was awful in 2020 and, despite the Cy Young season, still boasts a career ERA of only 4.00, with a 1.32 WHIP. He also has a career strikeout rate of 11.21 per nine innings, tops among active pitchers with 1,000 innings.
In 2021, however, Ray stopped walking hitters. Well, not entirely, but 2.4 walks per nine innings is excellent, no problems there. Ray got himself into shape, fixed his mechanics and delivered his normal, monster strikeout rate sans the free passes. It was glorious.
It is always possible Ray returns to the ol' walker he once was, but I think we should buy in. He adjusted. He changed. He is great now. He is also a Mariner, which is a darn nice place to pitch half the time, incidentally. Ray is an extreme fly ball pitcher and permitted 33 home runs in 2021, but Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander -- Ray's former Detroit Tigers teammates in 2014! -- allow myriad home runs, and they win awards, too.
Ray permitted a .210 batting average against, was great at home and on the road in his lone season for the Toronto Blue Jays and in each half of the season. There are no flaws here, except his past. Ray was absolutely a top-10 fantasy hurler in 2021, and he warrants this same attention in 2022 drafts.
