ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team saw its season come to an end in a 1-0 shootout loss to No. 12 Harvard in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday evening (Nov. 14) at Phyllis Ocker Field.

Harvard (17-1) converted on its first three shootout attempts, while Michigan was unable to score with its first three to give the Crimson a 3-0 shootout victory.

The first half went quickly, as neither team tallied a shot until Michigan drew a penalty corner with 56 seconds left before the half. Sofia Southam's attempt went wide, sending the teams to the half scoreless.

Harvard initially drew a penalty stroke with 12:39 remaining in the third quarter, but it was overturned following video review to keep the scoreless game intact. The Crimson drew a corner at the 2:39 mark of the third, but Anna Spieker laid out to push the shot wide for her first save of the contest.

Michigan (16-5) drew two consecutive penalty corners, the second at 12:48 in the fourth, but could not convert to keep zeroes on the scoreboard. The Wolverines dialed up the pressure the rest of the quarter but could not find the back of the cage, sending the game to overtime.

In the waning seconds of regulation, Harvard was assessed a yellow card for an illegal substitution, giving the Wolverines a player advantage for the first five minutes of the first extra session.

After playing up a player for the first five minutes of the first overtime, the Wolverines were given a pair of yellow cards to find themselves down two for the final three minutes of the frame. Spieker recorded two saves to keep Harvard off the board and send it to another extra session.

Neither team could find the cage in the second overtime, despite both drawing a pair of corners, resulting in the shootout.
