The transformation of Riverside’s former downtown library into a museum featuring the art collection of comedian Cheech Marin is well on its way.

Tucker May, senior superintendent of Hamel Contracting in Murrieta, said that as of Thursday, Nov. 4, the project was about 75% complete.

The Riverside City Council voted in January to hire Hamel Contracting to do the renovation at a cost of up to $10.7 million. The Riverside Art Museum committed to covering the expense.

“We’re just jazzed about the progress,” Riverside Art Museum Executive Director Drew Oberjuerge said.

The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture of the Riverside Art Museum, as it will be called, is on schedule to open May 8, she said. The center is being built to display the wide variety of art collected by Marin of Cheech & Chong fame, the counterculture comedy duo who made many laugh during the 1970s.

The city’s new main library opened in June, a few blocks away.
