GREAT BEND, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Stanton County junior Chesney Peterson is undefeated on the cross country course since a medical mishap at state her freshman season. Saturday morning in Great Bend she was merely racing time. She won again, posting her best time of the season to beat the Class 2A regional field by nearly two minutes in 18:44.37 – a time that would have won the 5A regional race by 30 seconds.

“My goal this season was just to run each course faster than I did the previous year,” she said. “I was set back at my first meet because we got stopped in the middle of the race because of lightning and we had to start over. All my races going forward another section was added on. So my whole vision was changed because I couldn’t compare myself to last year.”

Two-time defending state champion Stanton County dominated team scoring with just 29 points. Oakley scored 60 points for second, and Hutchinson Trinity edged Smith Center by just four spots to take the final team qualifying spot with 68 points.

Peterson cut nearly 30 seconds off her best time in Great Bend to win the race. Junior teammate Suzanne Farnham collected the silver in 20:37.57, and Smith Center senior Gracie Enochs ran third in 20:53.46.

All five Stanton County scorers finished in the top-14. Freshman Kenzington Nairn ran 10th in 22:52.41. Junior Belle Batteron placed 13th in 23:24.86, and sophomore Lexi Martinez crossed less than two seconds later for 14th.

Six underclassmen placed in the top-11 at the regional. Hoxie freshman Isabella Baier ran fourth in 21:10.59, followed by Sterling sophomore Faith Ekart in fifth with a time of 21:20.48. Smith Center freshman Serrena Armknecht placed sixth in 21:25.74, and Oakley sophomore Daysha Allison finished seventh in 22:26.19.

All five Oakley scorers ran in the top-25. Junior Jaelle Johnson was a top-10 finisher in ninth with a time of 22:42.89. Junior Aubrey Losey ran 18th in 23:53.96, junior Citori Bosserman placed 22nd in 24:45.49, and freshman Cadence Koch grabbed the final team points in 25th with a time of 25:18.00.

Stanton County heads to Victoria next weekend as clear favorites for individual and team titles. But winning a third-straight team championship will mean several new faces on the podium this time.

“Our team is basically brand new,” Peterson said. “We’re only returning two scorers. We graduated our three, five, and our seven from last year. (Maddison Seyb) got into a car accident this summer so we only had three returning girls. Every race they learn something new about cross country.”

Golub, Schmidt lead Stanton County boys to title

The Johnson County boys missed a state title by just eight points in 2020. The Trojans head back to Victoria as contenders for more serious hardware after a win at the Class 2A regional meet in Great Bend Saturday.

Stanton County took the top two spots to finish with 37 team points. Hutchinson Trinity finished second with 70 points, and Hoxie grabbed the final team spot at state with 92 points.

Trojan junior Kamryn Golub, the third-place finisher at state in 2020, pulled away to win the individual title by 51 seconds in 16:29.39. Senior Spencer Schmidt picked up the silver by 18 seconds in 17:20.41.

Four of the five Trojan scorers finished in the top-11 Saturday. Senior Ryan Wenman placed fifth in 17:53.94, followed by senior Uziel Carrasco in 11th with a time of 18:49.04. Senior Colton Adams grabbed the final team points in 19:08.77 for 19th.

Trinity placed three of its scorers in the top-12, led by juniors Jonah Godina and Brendan Kiser in third and fourth, respectively, in 17:38.97 and 17:44.60. Julen Wannamaker ran 12th in 18:49.97. Anthony Clennan finished 24th in 19:20.16, and Garrett Hageman scored the final team points in 19:50.27.

Ellinwood junior Asher Miller heads back to state as an individual after a sixth-place finish in 18:05.93. Medicine Lodge sophomore Branden Fischer also qualified in seventh with a time of 18:08.90.

Three more underclassmen rounded out the top-10. Hoxie sophomore Kane Epp led his state-qualifying team in eighth with a time of 18:30.22. Syracuse sophomore Angel Moreno qualified in ninth in 18:34.28, and Skyline freshman Ethan Robinson placed 10th in 18:46.31 to qualify. Sterling junior Dominic Wood was the final individual qualifier after a 13th-place finish in 18:55.80.
