Kaiden Ring is a senior striker for the Columbia girls' soccer team.
Saturday night, Ring scored with 2:15 remaining to lift the Blue Devils past Niskayuna 1-0 in the Section II Class AA quarterfinals.
A four-year varsity performer, Ring returns to the pitch Wednesday night when the third-seeded Blue Devils take on second-seeded Shaker in the Class AA semifinals at Mechanicville High School.
Q: As you have now played four varsity seasons, the end will be coming soon. How exciting is it for you to be in this position competing Wednesday in the semifinals?
A: This is the best possible way my senior year could end for me. (Saturday) night was kind of bittersweet because it was my last game on our home turf. I am really glad that it ended the way it did on a good note. That is one game I will definitely remember.
Q: It wasn't like your sister Kennedy scored, you scored. I know you are not a player who worries about individual accolades, but it had to be cool you scored the goal to win it, right?
A: It was definitely a cool feeling, for sure, but I am not one to take all of the credit. It was definitely a huge team effort.
Q: The team possesses an interesting roster dynamic with older players mixed together with a number of younger players. That sometimes can be a difficult mix to make work, but that does not seem to be a problem with your team. This team looks like it has been playing together for years, so how did it become so comfortable?
A: I can speak for my sister and I. We grew up playing together, passing it around in the back yard and playing on the same team for a few years. We have that basis to go on. My sisters and the other young girls on the team have always played together and I have played with the older girls. We kind of just meshed. It was an easy blend for our team. It has been really fun.
Q: You come up through the ranks as a freshman and sophomore hoping by the time you are a senior, the team will in the position you are in now playing in the semifinals. It has not always been easy, so talk about the journey you have been on over these four years?
A: It has not always been easy. Definitely this year going into it, we were going to be a team to be reckoned with and a hard team to beat. In the past, it has not always been that way. We fought with our hearts, but with the skill it does not always go the way you want. Nevertheless, I have always fought with my heart and tried to do my best at the end of the day — whether it was a win or a loss. It is a great feeling after four years to be able to come out and be in such a great position in the semifinals. That is something, if you asked me a couple of years ago, I wouldn't have expected. It is such a great feeling to see how all the hard work the team put in paid off. Our work is being put to good, which is such a great feeling.
Q: How old where you when you started playing soccer?
A: I was like three or four when I started kicking the ball around. At a young age, I started with lacrosse and soccer. As I got older, soccer came out on top. It was really what I was passionate about. I have always played with my heart and it has always been a game I absolutely loved. I will find any excuse to play it. At the end of the day, it it is important to me and it is important to my family, so it won out.
Q: Are you going to find an excuse to keep playing after high school?
A: I have not committed anywhere yet, but I am definitely looking to play at the collegiate level. I am exploring all of my options currently.
Q: What are looking to pursue in terms of a major in college?
A: I am considering majoring in criminal justice. I really enjoy helping people and I want to work for the good.
Q: What would it mean if we get to the end of the Class AA sectional tournament and the name of the champion is Columbia?
A: Wow, that would mean everything to me and everyone on the team. That would be the best possible way to end my high school career.
