MORGANTOWN — Neal Brown’s visor could not hide his frustration after Saturday’s 23-20 loss to Texas Tech.

The Mountaineers sputtered out of the gate, struggling in all facets. Texas Tech entered halftime in possession of a 17-0 lead, and while West Virginia battled back in the second half, the Mountaineers ultimately lost their second consecutive game.

Brown opened his press conference by apologizing to the fans, relaying his anger over how the Mountaineers played in the first half. The frustration the head coach felt postgame carried over to Tuesday, when he spoke to the media ahead of this weekend’s matchup with Baylor.

“I’m so (angry) about how we played at the beginning of the game because, in other sports, I kind of understand you’ve got all these games,” Brown said. “Football, you get 12. How the hell (do) you not get ready to play one game a week? I don’t get it.”

Brown spoke at length about the team’s struggles, emphasizing the group’s inability to be dependable.

“We’re a 2-3 football team because we lack consistency, I think that’s been pretty clear,” Brown said. “At times in every game this season, we’ve played really good football in all three phases. I think you can go back and look at different times where we’ve played well, but we’ve not put a whole game together.”

Through five games, West Virginia’s season has been a roller coaster. The team has struggled to successfully execute the same skill two weeks in a row, presenting a mixed bag each time out.

Saturday against Texas Tech, the Mountaineers had their worst first-half showing of the season, being held scoreless by the Red Raider defense. Despite rebounding in the second half and scoring all 20 points, various miscues placed a damper on the team’s successes.

“We’ve got to be a more detail-oriented group, and there’s a small margin for error,” Brown said. “When we don’t do the details right, then we’re killing ourselves in the red zone or not putting ourselves in position (to win).”

O’Laughlin

reflects on injury

Tight end Mike O’Laughlin returned to the Mountaineer’s lineup last month after missing the entirety of fall camp with an injury. He has since played in the team’s last three games.

“Getting back into practice and stuff was a little difficult, conditioning-wise and just getting your football legs underneath you again because that is a real thing,” O’Laughlin said. “Once I had a few practices under my belt, I kind of got back in the rhythm and in the flow of things. Now, I’m good. I’m ready to go.”

O’Laughlin saw his first action on Sept. 18 against Virginia Tech, but has taken an increasing role in the offense each week. Against Texas Tech, the redshirt junior totaled 35 yards on five receptions.
