A look at the Colorado Avalanche’s roster heading into the 2021-22 season.
Forwards
11 Mikhail Maltsev
C | 23 | 6-3 | 198
Acquired from New Jersey for defenseman Ryan Graves, whom the Avs probably would have lost in the expansion draft, Maltsev is a solid young addition.
13 Valeri Nichushkin
W | 26 | 6-4 | 210
Another contract year for the big Russian with massive potential. He seems capable of doubling his career-high 14 goals.
17 Tyson Jost
C | 23 | 5-11 | 187
He has found his niche as a reliable two-way player and key penalty killer. Will his scoring potential surface?
18 Alex Newhook
C | 20 | 5-10 | 190
The talented rookie from Boston College did not stand out through training camp and preseason. But the Avs believe his ceiling is high.
25 Logan O’Connor
W | 25 | 6-0 | 175
Much like Jost, another exceptional role player with offensive potential. He’s extraordinarily tough for his size, too.
29 Nathan MacKinnon
C | 26 | 6-0 | 200
A three-time Hart Trophy finalist in the last four years, MacKinnon is a world-renowned player who desperately wants to deliver on team’s Stanley Cup potential. Will not play in opener after positive COVID-19 test.
37 J.T. Compher
C | 26 | 6-0 | 190
Coming off a disappointing season but spent offseason preparing himself mentally to better handle adversity. He’s now on the No. 1 power play.
43 Darren Helm
C | 34 | 6-0 | 192
Signed a one-year contract after a 13-year stint with the Red Wings. He’s a responsible depth player chasing the Cup.
75 Sampo Ranta
W | 21 | 6-2 | 195
He played for the University of Minnesota the last three seasons and was the most impressive young Avs forward in the preseason. Can play on any line.
91 Nazem Kadri
C | 31 | 6-0 | 192
Second-line center won’t be back next season if he doesn’t produce more offense and avoid costly suspensions.
92 Gabe Landeskog
W | 29 | 6-1 | 215
The captain is beginning a seven-year, $49 million contract. He’s intent on proving he’s worth the investment.
95 Andre Burakovsky
W | 26 | 6-3 | 201
A free agent after the season, Burakovsky probably has the best wrist shot on the team. The Avs will try to extend him if he gets off to a hot offensive start.
95 Mikko Rantanen
W | 25 | 6-4 | 215
The world-class right winger scored 30 goals in 52 games last season. He’s capable of reaching 50 goals in a full 82-game campaign.
Defensemen
3 Jack Johnson
D | 33 | 6-1 | 227
The 950-game NHL veteran signed a one-year deal off a professional tryout contract. He adds depth and experience.
4 Bo Byram
D | 20 | 6-1 | 190
He’s the next Cale Makar, but shoots from the other side (left). Byram will be a staple for this team for a long time.
6 Erik Johnson
D | 33 | 6-4 | 225
Injuries limited the former No. 1 overall pick to four games last season. He’s an important player if he can remain healthy.
7 Devon Toews
D | 27 | 6-1 | 191
Beginning his second season with the Avs on the injured list after offseason shoulder surgery. He’ll return to the top pairing this month.
8 Cale Makar
D | 23 | 5-11 | 187
The 2021 Norris Trophy finalist could be the next Bobby Orr. He’s a generational defenseman and only injuries will limit his production.
28 Ryan Murray
D | 28 | 6-1 | 206
Signed a one-year free-agent contract to chase the Stanley Cup. The 2012 No. 2 overall draft pick by Columbus is a stable, calming presence.
49 Sam Girard
D | 23 | 5-10 | 170
The savvy playmaker is looking to improve defensively in the physical areas of the ice. Excellent at puck management.
56 Kurtis MacDermid
D | 27 | 6-5 | 233
Under-skilled but ultra-tough. He was acquired in a trade to serve as a deterrent and heavyweight old-school enforcer.
Goalies
31 Jonas Johansson
G | 26 | 6-5 | 220
Had a good run finishing 5-1-1 last year after being acquired from Buffalo in March. He was re-signed for depth and it’s already paying off.
35 Darcy Kuemper
G | 31 | 6-5 | 215
Acquired from Arizona for a 2022 first-round draft pick and more — a steep price if he doesn’t meet expectations as a pending free agent.
39 Pavel Francouz
G | 31 | 6-0 | 179
Missed all of last season with double hip surgeries. He’s injured again (lower-body) and will start the season on IR.
