Some San Francisco bars made the choice to simply not reopen during the pandemic, even after to-go cocktails with food received legal blessing, and instead took on a hibernation period with a little remodeling. Or in the case of 16th Street bar Dalva, and its slightly swankier back bar the Hideout, a lot of remodeling. But the renovations are closing in on completion, and Eater SF reports that Dalva will reopen with a redesigned interior to make it, well, less of a dive bar.
“Listen, I think dives are great, but I don’t want to work in one,” co-owner Eric Reichborn-Kjennerud told Eater SF. New partner Eric Ochoa explained to the site. “It’s a complete remodel and gut job.”
The name Dalva will remain intact, as will the name of its craft cocktail rear bar the Hideout. But the floors are being redone, as is Dalva’s main bar. Color Atelier is applying a fresh coat of paint, new custom furniture will be added throughout, and the washrooms are getting a facelift.
The draft beer taps are all being moved to the Hideout back area, but the craft cocktails previously only available at the Hideout will be served at both bars. It sounds like there will also be some food additions, though Eater SF says these will be along the lines of “Mission local tortilla chips and perhaps fancy peanuts.”
“It’s going to be way less divey,” Reichborn-Kjennerud told the site. “There will always be some people who reminisce, but Dalva needs to be fixed. It was old when we got it. We have to make some improvements.”
It’s still unclear when Dalva will reopen, though Eater SF reports the front Dalva bar will reopen “this fall,” the Hideout sometime later, and a possible addition of parklets out front.
