Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio –A complete team effort led to a 3-0 shutout win over UConn for the Ohio State men’s hockey team Saturday afternoon in Columbus. Freshman goalie Jakub Dobeš stopped all 32 shots he faced, while sophomores Patrick Guzzo and Travis Treloar and junior Tate Singleton all found the back of the net. The Buckeye penalty kill was 4-for-4 in the win, which moved the Buckeye winning streak to three.

The Buckeyes, now 3-1-0 on the year, swept the Huskies (2-3-0) with the 3-0 shutout win Saturday and a come from behind 4-3 victory Friday. Ohio State scored the last seven goals of the series, with Dobeš stopping all 55 shots he faced in the stretch.

Quoting head coach Steve Rohlik

“It’s so hard to win at this level on any given night. It’s so competitive across the board. Any time you get one win it’s huge but when you can put two in a row and sweep on the weekend it’s something to hang your hat on. But like I told the guys, it’s back to work on Monday. Let’s enjoy this weekend right now but starting on Monday we’re thinking about getting better.”

How it Happened

  • Ohio State carried play to start, putting the first five shots on goal. UConn picked up momentum on the strength of two power plays and ended the first ahead in shots on goal, 12-7.
  • In the second, Buckeye Patrick Guzzo opened the scoring at 12:10. He won the faceoff in the Huskies’ zone to Matt Cassidy, who found Guzzo driving the net and he scored on a backhand. The goal was his first of the year.
  • Shots were 12-10 in favor of the Buckeyes in the second period and each team was 0-for-1 on the power play.
  • Ohio State carried its one-goal advantage until 12:10 of the third. With the teams skating 4-on-4 because of the third set of matching penalties in the game, Quinn Preston won the puck battle in the UConn zone and found Travis Treloar in the high slot. He one-timed a shot for a 2-0 Ohio State lead, with Grant Gabriele also assisting on the goal.
  • With a little more than three minute remaining, UConn pulled its goalie for the extra attacker. Tate Singleton was able to get the puck after an errant shot and scored from the Buckeye zone at 17:24.
  • Buckeye goalie Jakub Dobeš had 10 saves in the final period, with Ohio State putting six shots on net.
  • The Buckeyes were 4-for-4 on the penalty kill in the win.
  • Ohio State blocked 15 shots vs. UConn, led by Mason Lohrei, Dominic Vidoli, Kamil Sadlocha, Ryan O’Connell and Will Riedell with two each.
