MANISTEE — Nearly 90% of the sidewalk has been poured at the corner of First and Cherry streets near the Riverwalk by Douglas Park in Manistee.

About half of the sidewalk was poured last Monday and another large chunk of the sidewalk was poured on Friday afternoon.

This comes as the city continues with ongoing repairs to the Riverwalk, which were needed as erosion has damaged much of the sidewalks near the Riverwalk and the riverbank.

A portion of retaining wall at the west end of the Riverwalk collapsed in March 2020 when high water levels combined with strong winds eroded the wall and the soil beneath.

Repairs to the Riverwalk have been underway since May. The city received the U.S. Corps of Engineers permit on April 29. The permit was delayed due to heavy workloads. Construction began in early May. The contractor for the project is Swidorski Bros. Excavating LLC, with awarded $1.885 million contract.

According to a construction update from the city of Manistee's website, "this past week, the sidewalk was 90% poured. The remaining section will be added later because it is in the staging area. Also, about 80% of the Reach A armor stone has been installed."

The deck boards have been fully installed. The city also began installing railing for the Riverwalk.

The update posted online said in the upcoming week stones will continue to be placed and installation of the railing on the Riverwalk will be completed.

Lastly, the city will be reviewing and planning possible extensions of the project limits. It will also cut in the remaining joints for the sidewalk.

The city will also continue repairs to local streets.

The schedule for repairs for streets this year are Jackson, Van Buren, Jefferson and 8th streets. This past week, the city website noted that the construction and repairs included:

• 620 feet of new 8-inch ductile iron water main was constructed on Van Buren Street;

• A new fire hydrant was installed on Van Buren Street; and

• Tree and brush clearing was completed on Jefferson Street.

This week repairs and construction will include:

• The contractor will continue installing the water main on Van Buren Street;

• Pressure testing will start for the newly constructed water main loop; and

• The storm sewer will be constructed on Jackson Street.
