Padres Daily: Still in it, but what a waste - The San Diego Union-Tribune

susukema.blogspot.com

Good morning from San Francisco,

The Padres lost again last night.

I wrote in my game story about the Padres giving up another home run and not hitting any, and I alluded to them essentially loitering in the National League wild card race. Read about it here.

The St. Louis Cardinals are now the team in the second wild card spot, because they have been relatively good, winning 11 of their past 20 games.

Relatively good is all it has taken. Because here is what the Padres and Cincinnati Reds have done since Aug. 22, the day the Reds first took over the second wild card spot:

The flip side of the Padres still being in it is how they’re going to feel if they don’t win it.

“It would be extremely frustrating,” Wil Myers said last night. “It is obviously frustrating with this last month, especially to have the teams who are really competing for the second wild card not really playing that well down the stretch. It could definitely make it more difficult or more frustrating at the end.”

It might actually be good that the Cardinals are the ones to chase. The Padres at least play them this weekend.

But there is a potential snag in that idea: The Padres would need to beat the Cardinals.

“We can’t worry about those other teams,” Myers said. “They’re not playing as well, but if we want to make this thing happen, we’ve got to focus on ourselves and go out there and take care of business. It’s not something we have been doing lately, and it’s something that we’ve got to flip the script and make that happen.”

So why haven’t they?

What’s wrong with the Padres? How much time do you have?

My boss, Jay Posner, and I tried to delve into a little bit on our Hot Lava Padcast yesterday. I don’t know that we came up with anything that will change the world — or even change the Padres. But give it a listen (here).

All right, that’s it for me.

Yes, I followed one of the shortest newsletters in the history of Padres Daily with what has to be the shortest.

I promise I’m working on other stories to help us all understand where the Padres are at, what it means and what might happen. So stay tuned.

For now … talk to you tomorrow.
