PASADENA — Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and No. 13 UCLA couldn’t overcome their first half struggles in a 40-37 loss to Fresno State Saturday night in the Rose Bowl.

The Bruins, who came off a bye week, didn’t earn any style points with AP Top 25 voters in their first showing as a ranked team and were unable to complete a second half rally in suffering their first loss in three games.

Thompson-Robinson kept the offense moving and scored on three of the last four UCLA drives, including a pair of touchdown passes to receiver Kyle Philips in the fourth quarter.

Philips caught a 15-yard touchdown pass with 54 seconds left in the game give UCLA a 37-33 lead.

Thompson-Robinson finished with 278 passing yards, including 132 in the third quarter, and three touchdowns. He was also UCLA’s leading rusher with 67 yards on 13 carries.

The Bruins allowed enough time for quarterback Jake Haener and the Bulldogs to piece together a game-winning drive. Receiver Jalen Cropper caught a 13-yard pass from Haener to cap a six-play, 75-yard drive in 40 seconds.

“I thought Kyle did a really nice job and it was one of those cliché games, where whoever had the ball last was going to win it,” Kelly said. “Unfortunately, they had the ball last. You’ve never going to think that you had scored too soon.

“I’m not going to tell Kyle to take a knee when it is 54 seconds. But again, I think (Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener) was a special player who really made some plays that were impressive today.”

The offense struggled in the first half as Thompson-Robinson completed just 2 of 5 pass attempts. Running backs Zach Charbonnet, Ethan Fernea and Brittain Brown combined for 23 rushing yards as the Bruins trailed 23-10 at the half.

“They really packed the box,” Kelly said about Fresno State’s plan to stop the run. “Their safeties were really down in there tight, and there were a lot of people around the ball.

“We felt like we had some play-action passes. We got the ball thrown to the top a couple of times (in the first half), had some big plays that way. That helped get us back in the football game.

Charbonnet would finish the night with 19 rushing yards and two touchdowns on six carries.

Running back Ronnie Rivers led the Bulldogs’ offense with 137 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Haener passed for 455 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

UCLA safety Kenny Churchwell III had an interception and a return of 33 yards with 1:05 left in the first half. UCLA’s offense would take over on its 33 yard line, before Thompson-Robinson lost control and fumbled on the next play.

Churchwell had replaced safety Quentin Lake, who was injured and did not return to the game.

“Kenny came in and he held his own,” Defensive back Qwuantrezz Knight said. “He made great plays.”

Knight recorded his first-career forced fumble, knocking the ball loose on a tackle of Rivers in the fourth quarter.

UCLA defensive lineman Otito Ogbonnia and tight end Mike Martinez also suffered injuries and did not return. Martinez was seen on crutches after coming back from the locker room.

“Otito and Q-Lake going down was huge,” Knight said. “But our guys are prepared. They’re ready to be the next man up. We always sub at practice. We all make adjustments like that to be ready for this time.”

Ogbonnia tried to warm up in the second half but was unable to return.
