WATERVILLE — The team investigating a fatal 2020 shooting in which a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy killed a Wenatchee man has turned over its report to the county prosecutor.
The North Central Washington Special Investigation Unit is comprised of investigators from multiple police departments, created to probe incidents, including shootings by police, that create conflicts for individual departments. In a press statement, NCW SIU spokesman Capt. Brian Chance of the Wenatchee Police Department said its teammembers “have briefed the involved agency along with the Douglas County Prosecuting Attorney. The completed investigation has been provided to the Douglas County Prosecuting Attorney for review.”
Deputy Nick English shot and killed 29-year-old Thomas Mathes III while responding to a domestic disturbance 911 call in Rock Island on April 21 that year. At the time, police said Mathes was a guest in the home on Norma Lane. Police said at some point during the incident, Mathes armed himself with a handgun.
English, 28, joined the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in 2017. He was placed on administrative leave after the shooting, but has since returned to duty. Douglas County Prosecutor Gordon Edgar must review the SIU report and determine whether the shooting was justified.
