Crews split Bootleg fire management into two zones; still 0% contained - OregonLive

Crews battling the Bootleg fire will split efforts into two zones due to the size and complexity of the Klamath County conflagration, the U.S. Forest Service announced Monday.

Firefighters saw some moderate relief Sunday after three days of explosive growth caused the Klamath County wildfire to reach more than 150,000 acres in less than a week.

But the fire is still 0% contained, leading incident managers to divide their efforts to attack the fire.

The Oregon Department of Forestry will oversee the southern part of the fire and Pacific Northwest Team 10, a regional response team, is taking on the northern part. A team from the state Fire Marshal’s Office is working on protecting homes and other buildings.

So far, more than 900 people from around the state have responded to help fight the fire, burning in the Fremont-Winema National Forest and private land north of Klamath Falls.

The U.S. Forest Service said the fire grew 5,000 acres on Sunday -- a much smaller area than the previous three days when the fire doubled in size each day.

The rapid growth prompted the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office to threaten arrests to anyone who ignored evacuation orders. Klamath County Emergency Manager Brandon Fowler said the office would not be releasing information about how many people they had arrested or cited, because they were busy with other tasks during the fire emergency.

Level 3 (go now) evacuation notices remain in effect near the small towns of Beatty and Sprague River on the southern edge of the fire while residents of the Klamath Forest Estates and Moccasin Hills are under a Level 2 (get set) alert.

Other wildfires in Oregon:

The Grandview fire: It started Sunday northeast of Sisters and doubled in size by Monday morning and was burning over 2,000 acres by Monday afternoon. Gov. Kate Brown invoked the Emergency Conflagration Act, which allows local fire agencies to seek statewide help fighting the fire.

A plane dropped orange fire retardant on the fire, whose smoke was visible for miles, and ground crews cut fire lines amid grass and trees.

Residents of the town of Culver in Jefferson County were told to immediately evacuate because the fire was threatening homes in the area.

The state fire marshal’s office tweeted Monday that task forces from Benton, Linn and Lane counties were going to help fight the wildfire. Firefighters from Marion County were ordered to the scene Sunday evening.

Officials said the cause of the Grandview fire is still under investigation.

The Jack fire: It has burned in Douglas County since last Tuesday and is now 10% contained. As of Monday morning, it was burning in more than 12,000 acres. Residents of the Dry Creek community, as well as several Forest Service campgrounds in the area are still under Level 3 (go now) evacuation orders.
