NORMAN — Five current and former University of Oklahoma men's gymnasts completed day one of competition at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials in St. Louis Thursday night.
After the first day, 2019 graduate Yul Moldauer paces the OU squad at the meet, holding third place in the all-around with a 83.650. Five of Moldauer's six routines scored 14.000-plus and he holds top-five spots on four events, including second on pommel horse (14.100) and parallel bars (14.400).
Moldauer recapped day one and competing with the OU contingent in St. Louis.
"It's amazing (competing with OU teammates)," said Moldauer. "Those guys are my brothers and teammates. To be at the Olympic Trials with the teammates and guys you grew up with the last five years, talking about dreams and the Olympics and to be on the same floor with them at Olympic Trials is incredible and gives off this certain type of energy.
"We all know what to tell each other and know each other's energy levels and so to be back out there especially with Mark (Williams) and Josh (Yee), too," continued Moldauer. "It's a mix of my current gym, 5280 Gymnastics, and OU, it's super special for me because I know how much both of those programs have done for me. To be at Olympic Trials with both teams it's literally living a dream."
2017 OU alum Allan Bower sits seventh in the all-around competition with a 82.500 tally. Bower was consistent across all events, scoring three 14.000-plus routines and holds top-five spots on three events. Bower put up his biggest score of the night on vault in the last rotation, sticking a 14.500.
Competing for an event specialist spot in Tokyo, OU senior and two-time NCAA individual national champ Gage Dyer impressed on floor and vault. Dyer registered respective scores of 14.250 and 14.650 on the events. Dyer competed two vaults, scoring a 14.500 on his first before the 14.650 stuck double-double on his second attempt. The Sooner captain holds a share of fifth on both events after day one.
OU rising senior Vitaliy Guimaraes holds 13th in the all-around with a 80.250 tally. Guimaraes put up an impressive 14.700 vault score that ranks second heading into Saturday's day two.
2021 graduate Matt Wenske sits in 15th in the all-around ranks after a 77.600 performance Thursday evening. Wenske shares a tie for eighth on parallel-bars after his 13.900 routine.
Due to an injury sustained in warmups, 2017 OU alum and World Championships team member Colin Van Wicklen had to withdraw from the Olympic Trials competition this weekend.
OU's five representatives plus head coach Mark Williams and assistant coach Josh Yee return to The Dome at America's Center in St. Louis Saturday for the second and final day of Trials.
Saturday's meet will begin at 2 p.m. CT and be available to watch for the first hour on The Olympic Channel before coverage on NBC begins at 3 p.m. Live results are available via stlouis2021.com/results.
