Brewers complete sweep in 5-0 victory over Rockies - Brew Crew Ball

The Brewers hardly broke a sweat in their 5-0 win over the Rockies.

Eric Lauer offered a stellar performance, efficient and sharp across six innings. He got things started with a three up, three down first inning. He went on to pitch through some trouble in the second, but got out of it by striking out the side, capping off the inning with a bases-loaded strikeout to pitcher Chi Chi González. Lauer otherwise cruised, striking out six, allowing only two hits, walking two, and notching four three up, three down innings.

With Lauer lights out on the mound, Keston Hiura made the Brewers the first to the scoreboard, hitting his third home run of the season and second of the series.

González also pitched well, and the Brewers were relatively quiet on his watch, outside of the Hiura bomb. When Lucas Galbreath came on to replace González in the bottom of the sixth, he gave up a base hit to Luis Urías and a full count bomb to Omar Narváez to bring the Brewers up 3-0.

After Narvy cleared the bases with no outs, Christian Yelich drew a walk. He remained there until Jace Peterson walked, putting runners at first and second with two outs and Keston Hiura at the plate. Hiura smacked a double to the gap at the right field warning track to score Yelich and Peterson, bring the Brewers up 5-0, and notch his third RBI on the day.

Granted a restart of sorts with the concurrence of Re-opening Day and a Daniel Vogelbach hamstring injury, Hiura appears to be in the early stages of a resurgence. Two days before today’s home run and bases clearing double, Hiura started a late-inning slug fest that would send the game to extra innings and hit the sac fly that scored the game-winning run. Hiura was also robbed of extra bases on an amazing Yonathan Daza catch. All of Hiura’s contact was hard hit, and all of it came on his erstwhile weakness, fastballs.

The Brewers bullpen held up Lauer’s strong performance. In the seventh, Trevor Richards added on to Lauer’s four 1-2-3 innings with a three up, three down inning of his own. Hunter Strickland struck out the side after walking the leadoff batter in the eighth. Ryan Weber also went three up, three down in the ninth, bolstered by a Peterson-Adames-Hiura double play and an awesome defensive play by Keston Hiura to end the game.

The Brewers complete the Rockies sweep twelve games above .500 and 2.5 games ahead of the Cubs to lead the NL Central. They’ll kick off a three game series against the second-place Cubs on Monday.
