Former Tennessee head coach Butch Jones proves he's still extremely insecure - atozsportsnashville.com

It’s been nearly four years since Butch Jones was the Tennessee Vols’ head coach.

Over the last several years, Jones served on Alabama’s staff as a special assistant to head coach Nick Saban.

Numerous fired head coaches have landed at Alabama to work under Saban to rehab their image.

Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian, and Mario Cristobal are among the fired head coaches who worked under Saban as assistants. All three of those coaches parlayed their success under Saban into new head coaching gigs.

Jones also emerged from his time under Saban as a head coach, landing the job at Arkansas State this past offseason.

You’d think that Jones would’ve exited Tuscaloosa with a sense of confidence. But it turns out he’s still the same insecure head coach that was fired at Tennessee.

CBS Sports recently did a story on Saban and his “coaching rehab program”. The story featured a quote from Jones that shows he’s as insecure as ever.

“Everybody told me, ‘Butch it’s hard for you right now, but the longer this plays out, the better it’s going to be. You’ll be back,'” said Jones. “I had a guy in [the Tennessee] administration call me the other day, ‘Butch, everybody here now respects the hell out of you.'”

I have no idea whether or not Jones is telling the truth about someone at UT calling him up to tell him that everyone “respects the hell” out of him. But I have my doubts.

Jones left behind an incredibly toxic culture at Tennessee. The entire program was a mess (as detailed by Travis Haney for 247Sports in late 2016).

It’s hard to imagine that folks at Tennessee suddenly respect Jones — especially after Jones turned down assistant coaching opportunities to remain on a $35K annual salary at Alabama so he could collect all of his buyout payments from the Vols.

But even if this comment was really made, why bring it up to the media? Jones is clearly still an insecure guy that’s extremely worried about how he’s perceived by others.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. This is how Jones has always been. And I doubt it will ever change.
