MARTINS FERRY — While the victim in the Memorial Day shooting in the city is recovering from his injuries, the alleged gunman is facing a charge of felonious assault in court.
According to Belmont County court records, 48-year-old Timothy D. Bradley is charged with felonious assault after allegedly shooting a man on Washington Street in Martins Ferry on May 31.
Police believe the shooting stemmed from a dispute that involved the victim doing odd jobs for Bradley.
During his first court appearance on June 2, Bradley did not enter a plea to the charge. He posted $50,000 bond on June 3 and was released from the Belmont County Jail.
Bradley appeared again in Belmont County Northern Division Court on June 9 with his lawyer, Adam Myser.
A joint motion for a continuance was granted by Judge Christopher Berhalter.
The next preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. July 21 before Berhalter.
Terms of Bradley’s bond include not violating any laws of the state of Ohio and being of good behavior.
Bradley also was required to meet with a probation officer when he posted bond.
Martins Ferry Police Chief John McFarland said the victim was taken to a Morgantown, West Virginia, hospital for treatment of his injuries.
The chief believes the man is recovering well from the shooting. McFarland said when his officers interviewed the victim, he was up and walking around.
Myser said Friday he could not go into specifics regarding the case because it is still being investigated. He said, however, “… this matter is of great public importance as there are many residents of Belmont County that lawfully own firearms and absolutely have the right to defend themselves in certain circumstances. That right has long been recognized especially when individuals are within their own residence. Therefore, and heaven forbid, but many citizens of this county could easily find themselves in Mr. Bradley’s shoes just by simply protecting themselves. Regardless, we understand that a firearm was discharged within a community and law enforcement and prosecutors are carrying out their responsibilities under those circumstances.”
During a recent Martins Ferry City Council meeting, the officers who responded to the shooting received high praise from city leaders on how they handled and secured the scene. It was noted how quickly officers arrived at the scene. A neighbor also helped the victim, who came to his house seeking assistance.
During the council meeting, Jack Regis Jr., city safety director and Martins Ferry Volunteer Fire Department member, said he lives on Washington Street. He described the shooting as shocking.
“If you don’t already know … we have probably the best safety forces in the valley in my opinion,” Regis Jr. said, adding Martins Ferry received mutual aid from neighboring first responders as well. “To watch the professionalism and how they responded and controlled the scene and secured the suspect, and immediately started rendering aid to the victim within seconds of the scene being secured, and the EMS working together to get the victim in the air to a trauma center, it was truly remarkable,” Regis Jr. said. “It was awesome to watch. It makes you feel proud to be a resident of this town, to have those people protecting you day in and day out.”
