The last remaining uncompleted element of the Florence Avenue 5 Freeway bridge project — the south on-ramp to the freeway — opened Thursday, May 13, Caltrans has announced.
Traffic may access the new on-ramp from either direction of Florence Avenue with signal control.
The new I-5 northbound Florence Avenue on- and off-ramps in Santa Fe Springs also opened to traffic on Thursday, April 22, 2021.
The essential construction of the Florence Avenue Interchange Project is now complete, Marc Bischoff, Caltrans spokesman, said in an email on Friday morning. There will be a one-year period of plant establishment and some minor work as a final punch list is completed/
The Florence Avenue Interchange Project is the fifth of six segments on the freeway widening project to reach completion. There are four lanes open to traffic in each direction from the 605 Freeway to north of Valley View Avenue.
Only the carpool lane remains to open and that won’t happen until the Valley View Avenue segment, the final one in the $1.8 billion, 6.7-mile 5 Freeway widening project between the Orange County border and the 605 Freeway that began in 2011, is completed, Bischoff said. It is now scheduled for mid-2022.
The Florence Avenue bridge has been widened from four to six lanes.
