SUNDERLAND — The Select Board has awarded a contract to Morais Concrete Services for road reconstruction projects on South Main Street, South Silver Lane and Falls Road.
With a contract of $252,698, the Springfield-based company was the low bidder for the projects, which involve the replacement of the sidewalk on the west side of South Main Street; creating a new sidewalk along the east side of South Silver Lane beginning at the intersection of Old Amherst Road and extending south approximately 2,000 feet; and improving bicycle accommodations on Falls Road.
The reconstruction projects are slated to begin this spring or summer, according to Town Administrator Geoff Kravitz. He expects the project to be completed by June.
In January 2020, Sunderland was awarded $333,871 toward the projects through the Complete Streets Funding Program. The town was one of 24 Massachusetts communities slated at the time to receive state money to fund local infrastructure projects aimed at improving accessibility for bicyclists, pedestrians, public transit users and people using other forms of transportation.
During Monday’s meeting, Select Board member Scott Bergeron questioned Morais Concrete Services’ lack of experience with Complete Streets projects.
Kravitz said the town didn’t specifically ask about experience with Complete Streets, but did check with “a number of their references.”
“They’ve done a number of projects in Massachusetts and Connecticut,” Kravitz said. “Most of the responses that we got, following up on similar type projects, were very positive.”
He added that any issues municipalities had with Morais Concrete Services were “minor and remedied fairly quickly.”
“We felt confident in moving forward,” he said, “and that there was nothing to the point of disqualifying their bid based on the references we checked.”
