JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KY3) - A new law requires all Missouri law enforcement officers to complete de-escalation and implicit bias training annually to maintain their licenses.
The law took effect New Year’s Day after approval from the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission in October.
Officers are now required to complete two separate one-hour training sessions over de-escalation techniques and how to recognize implicit bias.
“Our law enforcement officers take on extraordinary risks and make tremendous sacrifices to make Missouri safer,” said Gov. Mike Parson in October. “These enhanced standards will help equip officers with relevant, up-to-date training to meet the challenges they face daily and facilitate better communication and interactions with the public.”
“The POST Commissioners appreciate Secretary of State Ashcroft’s office for its quick action allowing us to implement these new officer training standards so officers and all Missourians can benefit from the de-escalation and implicit bias training,” said POST Commission Chair and Platte County Sheriff Mark Owen in October.
Missouri law enforcement officers are required complete 24 hours of annual continuing education training to maintain their licenses. The POST Commission’s action on Oct. 5, which required the one hour sessions in de-escalation and implicit bias training, will be part of each officer’s 24 hours of annual training.
More than 1,600 Missourians responded to a survey about their recent interactions with police over the summer. Around 450 said they wanted to see additional training for officers.
