Harrison County remains designated as red during the COVID-19 pandemic but reported no new deaths in the past week.
The color-coded designation, with red being the highest of the four, is based on the average score for two metrics: the weekly number of cases per 100,000 residents and the seven-day positivity rate for all tests completed. Harrison County has a point score of 3.0, which signifies a high positivity rate and community spread.
To date, 43 Harrison County residents have died of the virus, including two considered to be clinical deaths, meaning they likely had the virus at the time of their death but no test had been conducted to confirm.
Of those deaths, the Indiana State Dept. of Health’s COVID-19 dashboard puts 48.8% of them as persons 80 and older. The 70 to 79 age range accounts for 18.6% of the deaths, followed by 60 to 69 (16.3%), 50 to 59 (9.3%), 40 to 49 (4.7%) and 30 to 39 (2.3%).
More men — 53.5% — have died from the virus locally than women.
An additional 522 individuals have been tested, bringing the total to 16,103. Since March, there have been 38,399 tests conducted of Harrison Countians, with 3,336 positive tests reported, up 224 since last week.
Those younger than 20 have been tested more than any other age group. The ISDH dashboard breaks it down as follows: 0 to 19 – 19.5%; 20 to 29, 13.8%; 30 to 39, 14.4%; 40 to 49, 13.6%; 50 to 59, 14.9%; 60 to 69%, 11.9%; 70 to 79, 7.5%; 80 and older, 4.5%; and unknown, 0.1%.
Statewide, an additional 361 deaths were reported within the past week, bringing that number to 9,092, with 374 clinical deaths, up one from last week.
The number of tests administered to date stands at 6,498,762, with 2,847,632 individuals being tested. There have been 595,436 positive cases reported, up 24,959 since last week.
Vaccinations against the virus continue with those 70 and older now eligible to make an appointment to receive the first of the two required doses. Register online at https://ourshot.in.gov or by calling 211. A caregiver or loved one also may make an appointment on behalf of an eligible senior.
Under the red zone requirements, which will remain in effect until the metric has returned to orange or lower for two weeks, social gatherings of any kind, indoor or outdoor, is limited to 25 people; all business capacity must adhere to strict social-distancing guidelines (curbside pickup is preferred); and community recreational sports leagues and tournaments, as well as K-12 extracurricular activities, may continue with participants, required/support personnel and parents/guardians, and their minor children, only (all students and attendees at K-12 extracurricular activities must be social distanced and wear face coverings).
Senior center activities are suspended, and those in vulnerable populations should remain isolated.
Hospitals, long-term care facilities and other congregate settings may impose visitation limits.
