With the NHL offseason in full swing, the league has seen a number of faces change teams. However, despite this, there are still a number of former Chicago Blackhawks that are without contracts.

A hallmark of the Blackhawks’ last decade has been shedding large contracts, particularly after a championship or a winning season. This is mostly due to the rising salary cap, and contractual issues have plagued the team since around 2010.

While many of the key players from this era, such as Brian Campbell and Patrick Sharp, have since retired from the game, some of them are still playing professionally. Of these players, a number are still skating for an NHL club. Forward Andrew Ladd has played in almost 200 games for the New York Islanders over the past four years, and Niklas Hjalmarsson has become a staple of the Arizona Coyotes defense.

Despite this, there are still some notable former Blackhawks that are unrestricted free agents and have yet to be offered a contract. While not all of these names are stars, they are certainly names that Chicago fans will recognize from their glory days with the Hawks.

Of course, most of these players are now 30 or older, and in the twilight of their career. It is possible that they could still sign with a number of European clubs (as players like Marcus Kruger did last year). Slower play in one of these leagues could be beneficial for them. Cristobal Huet, the mostly forgotten goalie on the 2010 championship team, played in Switzerland and the French national team into his early 40s.

Hopefully, some of these players will still be able to find a role with an NHL team in need of some depth. There are a lot of franchises that could use these guys to their advantage, despite the fact that they are headed towards the end of their time in professional hockey, and as a few of the guys on this list were fan favorites, it would be a great joy to see them get picked up.
