CLEVELAND, Ohio — New York-based Dream Hotel Group announced Wednesday it plans in 2022 to open the 19-story, 207-room Dream Cleveland lifestyle hotel atop the southern portion of historic Masonic Temple at Euclid Avenue and East 36th St.
The hotel will feature guest rooms and suites, plus multiple dining and nightlife venues, a fitness center, and 100,000 square feet of meeting and event space.
All those elements, plus a 400-space garage, will be added to the 2,300-seat theater in Masonic Temple, operated by TempleLive, an affiliate of Arkansas-based Beaty Capital Group, Inc., which bought the complex in 2017 for $725,000.
A spokesperson for Dream Hotel Group said the project represents a $60 million investment.
"Today’s announcement is a testament to the strength of our brands and growing confidence in the travel industry despite these unprecedented times,” Dream Hotel Group CEO Jay Stein said in a news release.
“It is exciting to look beyond this recent period of anxiety and uncertainty to bring such an iconic project to Midtown Cleveland, “ said Beaty Capital Group Inc. President Lance Beaty.
Jeff Epstein, executive director of the nonprofit development corporation, Midtown Cleveland, said in an interview that the Dream Hotel announcement shows that Cleveland is still attractive to investors, despite the coronavirus pandemic and uncertainty about the national economy.
“The time to be planning new stuff is always at the bottom’’ of an economic cycle, Epstein said. “I do think there is opportunity in every crisis.”
Epstein said the Dream Hotel project is poised to begin a transformation of a relatively bleak section of Euclid Avenue between the Innerbelt and the Cleveland Clinic.
He said it would become more of a pedestrian-oriented residential and mixed-use district.
He also said the Dream Hotel and TempleLive partnership show that Cleveland can build successfully on its historic architecture, low cost of living, high quality of life and its attractiveness as a tourist destination.
Masonic Temple, built in 1921, is a massive brick structure at 3615 Euclid Ave. 20 blocks east of Playhouse Square. It has hosted the Cleveland Orchestra and numerous performing arts productions, while serving as the home to the Masons.
Most recently, under TempleLive management, it has hosted performers such as MGMT, Bastille, Fitz and the Tantrums, The 1975, Pixies, Kirk Franklin, Joe Rogan, Ghost, Leon Bridges and Sturgill Simpson.
Epstein said TempleLive has performed an extensive renovation on the historic building, designed by architects Hubbell and Benes, the architects of the 1916 Building of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
The Cleveland architectural firm of Bialosky is the designer and executive architect in charge of the Dream Hotel project.
Epstein said the project was ready for review in March by the city’s planning commission, but “all hell broke loose,’’ referring to disruptions caused by coronavirus pandemic. Architect Jack Bialosky, Jr., said it isn’t known yet when the project will be presented for review.
