Brats still sizzling Sunday at Madison restaurant as Brat Fest goes virtual - WKOW

MADISON (WKOW) -- A Memorial Day weekend tradition is missing this year.

Organizers canceled the World's Largest Brat Fest earlier this month. They were worried it would be too hard to socially distance the 125,000 people expected.

Brat Fest is still scheduled for next year. In the meantime, you can still buy virtual brats online and, as usual, all the money goes to local charities. As of Sunday afternoon, Brat Fest has raised more than $50,000.

But in downtown Madison, the brats were still sizzling Sunday. The Old Fashioned held a brat fry, cooking up brats from Sheboygan and buns from Middleton.

The restaurant enforced social distancing rules and staff wore masks, shields and gloves.

The general manager says they decided to do it to keep the spirit of Brat Fest alive.

"It's just such a culture in Madison. We just want to do just a little bit of that feel of what Brat Fest was," said Jennifer DeBolt. "We've all been glued inside everyday, so this is kind of fun for us to actually get some fresh air and celebrate the beautiful day we're having today."

They're also planning a cheese curd fry soon, but they haven't set a date yet.

The Old Fashioned will not reopen fully on Tuesday, as the Forward Dane Plan allows businesses to open at 25 percent capacity. The restaurant has been doing takeout orders during the pandemic.
