A left-leaning watchdog group railed against House Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.), calling his investigation into President Biden and his family’s foreign business deals a “complete and total failure.”
“The past eight months have been a complete and total failure, with Comer wasting all of his committee’s time on a series of political stunts that have failed to uncover a shred of evidence of wrongdoing against President Biden,” Kyle Herrig, the executive director of the Congressional Integrity Project, wrote in a statement Monday.
Herrig’s statement accompanied the publishing of a report titled “James Comer’s 8 Months of Abject Failure,” which includes a breakdown of events surrounding Comer’s investigation and allegations that Comer lied or “hyped up” certain details surrounding witness testimony.
“It’s important to recognize that the only thing Comer has proved so far is that he is not capable of conducting legitimate oversight and should not be trusted to lead this important committee,” Herrig said.
In recent months, Comer, alongside several GOP leaders, has led a widespread investigation into the Biden family’s foreign business dealings, particularly those connected to Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, during his time on the board of a Ukrainian energy company while his father was vice president.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has signaled in recent weeks that the investigations, including those of Comer and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), could rise to the level of an impeachment inquiry.
Last week, Comer said he believes there are enough votes in the House to open an impeachment inquiry into Biden, predicting the vote will be held in the middle of this month. Comer said he thinks the emails he secured from the National Archies and Records Administration (NARA) from Biden’s time as vice president will convince a final few Republicans to support opening an impeachment inquiry.
Part of Comer’s investigation included testimony from Devon Archer, a former business associate of Hunter Biden, who testified in July to the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability in a closed-door meeting, which lawmakers said included assertions that Hunter Biden sold the “illusion of access” to his father and that Hunter Biden sometimes put his father on speakerphone to talk to his business associates. Archer said he was not aware of President Biden committing any wrongdoing, but Republicans insist that is not the case and that the Biden family received payments and gifts.
Meanwhile, the report from the Congressional Integrity Project alleges Comer and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) failed to produce evidence of bribery connected to Biden while “misrepresenting” whistleblowers.
In a statement to The Hill, an Oversight and Accountability Committee spokesman said the “dark money leftist groups” are trying to distract from the evidence against the Biden family, while the committee has uncovered “overwhelming” evidence.
“Dark money leftist groups are attempting to distract from the bank records, suspicious activity reports, wire transfers from foreign adversaries, emails, texts and a transcribed interview with Biden family associated Devon Archer that all show Joe Biden allowed his family to sell him as ‘the brand’ to corrupt foreign oligarchs around the world,” the spokesman said.
