This season, Hakan Calhanoglu is continuing to show that he can be virtually the complete midfielder at Inter Milan.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInter1908. The newspaper highlight how the Turk has successfully transitioned into being a top-quality regista.
Last season, Calhanoglu played in a deep-lying role for essentially the first time in his career.
The former Bayern Leverklusen and AC Milan had more or less only taken up the position as an emergency solution.
A muscle injury that Marcelo Brozovic picked up during the September international break left Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi scranmbling for solutions, given that the Croat was a vital player in keeping Inter’s midfield balance.
However, the coach went with a somewhat unorthodox idea. He used Calhanoglu in the regista role in place of Calhanoglu.
However, the 29-year-old worked out so well in the position that he virtually became the first-choice player for the rest of the season.
Even when Brozovic was fit, it was typically Calhanoglu who started in the position ahead of him.

The big question about Calhanoglu was whether the former Rossoneri man would be able to effectively use his impressive technical ability and passing range in a deeper role on the pitch.
As it turns out, the Turkish international has answered those questions. And he has done so emphatically.
Calhanoglu does not quite play the regista position in the same way that Brozovic did. He does not quite possess the Croat’s feel for the rhythm and tempo for the game.
Rather, the Turkish international tends to immediately look up for a difficult, and highly impactful passing option.
And this has not been a bad thing for the Nerazzurri’s style of play.
With Calhanoglu in the control room, Inter have had a more direct style of play than ever. The Turk has given the team a sense of real impetus with his eye for a forward pass.
And apart from that, the Corriere notes, Calhanoglu is not only in the deep-lying role for his passing ability.
Far from it, the 29-year-old has also shown that he can more than adequately give defensive cover to the backline.
Calhanoglu’s last-ditch tackle on Nahitan Nandez in Inter’s Serie A clash away to Cagliari was the clearest example yet of his impressive defensive prowess.
