Five people, including a child, were rushed to the hospital after a severe crash in Garner on Saturday afternoon.
The crash happened between a white sedan and an SUV near 1220 New Bethel Church Road.
A state trooper said that three young adults (possibly teens) and one child were in a sedan, while a man was in the SUV. All five victims were taken to the hospital.
Highway Patrol confirmed Sunday one of the young adults died from their injuries.
Neighbors described hearing a loud bang and then rushed to help, using a hammer to break a window and rescue a person who was trapped inside a vehicle. Another person was pinned in their vehicle and had to be extricated by firefighters.
"It's complete chaos sometimes. You don't know what you should or shouldn't do, and it's pouring rain and you can see there's injuries," said Deb Frizzell, who was helping victims. "It's just really sad, confusing and chaos."
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
The conditions of the victims are unknown, but officials said there were no fatalities at the scene.
