Seven-time NASCAR Cup champion Jimmie Johnson failed to complete a lap in his NASCAR debut at the Circuit of the Americas due to his involvement in a multi-car crash in turns 19 and 20 on the first lap of Sunday’s EcoPark Automotive Grand Prix won by Tyler Reddick in triple overtime.
Johnson’s dismal qualifying effort of 31st in the 39-car field left him in the rear of the field where accidents often happen early in the race and Sunday on the 3.410-mile road course was no exception. The incident also involved Brad Keselowski, Todd Gilliland, Chris Buescher and eliminated Ty Dillon.
“I thought I had the wreck missed, but I just saw a flash of red out of nowhere,” Johnson said. “I guess there was more going on the outside of the No. 6 car (Keselowski) as it was spinning. I saw him and just got collected.”
