Rangers prospect Winston Santos has most complete fastball - The Dallas Morning News

Welcome to March. It’s madness, we hear. But it’s also time to start counting down the Rangers’ top 30 prospects. Why stop at 30, though? There are 31 days in the month, so we’ll do one a day through the entire month until we get to No. 1. It was a fun way to pass last March, especially since spring training got something of a late start. And it was fun to update late last summer because the future looked a lot brighter than the present.

Anyway, here we go:

No. 21 RHP Winston Santos

Age: 20

Height/weight: 6-0, 200

B-T: R-R

Who he is: Like Emiliano Teodo (No. 23), Santos was a bargain-basement international signing, costing only $10,000 in 2019. It’s looking like a nice consolation prize after the much more-heralded signing of outfielder Bayron Lora (since released) in that class produced nothing but trouble.

Why he is here: In two seasons in the US, Santos has put together a 3.41 ERA over 137 innings in the Arizona Complex League and Class A Down East. Over his last 19 games at Down East, he put together a 2.92 ERA and seems to be getting better as he grows. Though his fastball has “only” registered in the 90-95 mph range in his first two years, Baseball America ranked it as the No. 1 fastball in the organization due to its total package of stuff, cutting movement, command and control. There is a faction in the Rangers organization that ranks him in its top five pitching prospects when adding in work ethic to his tools. Nice company, since Jack Leiter, Owen White, Kumar Rocker and Brock Porter are all in the system, too.

What’s his future: Good as his fastball is, it’s probably going to be the development of a slider that determines his future. It was virtually non-existent when the Rangers signed him. It has become adequate over three years and there is belief it can continue to get better. He stayed in Arizona over the winter to continue working on it and on building strength. The Rangers have seen the fastball up to 98 this spring.

Where he will start: He likely opens the season in a very strong rotation at advanced Class A Hickory.
