Keeping it all in perspective, the Cowboys did what they had to do over the weekend against a struggling opponent.
Sunday McNeese State wrapped up its four-game weekend sweep of Alcorn with a 23-1 thumping at Joe Miller Ballpark.
During the series, McNeese outscored the Braves 67-3, outhitting them 47-11 as all four games were shortened to seven innings.
“We were able to stay focused,” said McNeese head coach Justin Hill. “We threw the ball well again and we played good defense the entire weekend.”
As for the offense, the Cowboys got plenty of help while improving to 6-2 as Alcorn fell to 0-4. Braves pitchers walked 31 Pokes and hit another 15 during just 24 innings of McNeese offense.
“We were able to get some extra people some opportunities and they took advantage of it,” said Hill. “That’s good to see. We still have some work to do on offense, but we did what we had to do.”
The Cowboys finished with 16 hits yesterday. Transfer second baseman Brad Burckel led the way going 4-for-5, scoring four runs and driving in three. He raised is batting average to .444.
Jordan Yeatts drove in runs with a pair of hits, including a triple. Payton Harden was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and scored twice. Harden, who was dropped in the order, responded by going 8-for-15 with nine RBIs.
“I got back to myself and just thought about going back up the middle,” said Harden. “I don’t care where I hit, I just want to do what is best for the team.”
Issac Duplechain got the win for the Cowboys, allowing just two hits while striking out four in two innings of work. The win was the right-hander’s first decision of the year.
McNeese put the game away early with eight runs in the first. Schuyler Thibodaux’s 2-run triple was the big blow.
Yeatts’ 2-run triple was the highlight of McNeese’s second 8-run inning of the game, this one coming in the fourth. The Cowboys finished by scoring three runs in each of the last two innings they batted.
In all, five Cowboys finished the game with at least two hits while six pitchers combine to strike out 10 Braves.
McNeese will hit the road for the first time this season Tuesday when they travel to Baton Rouge to play Southern. They will return home for a weekend series against Louisiana Tech starting Friday night.
