Angels complete improbable comeback in New York - Halos Heaven

susukema.blogspot.com

If you stopped watching the Angels game after the first inning, or simply because of how long the game took, I don’t blame you. The Yankees scored seven runs of Shohei Ohtani in the first and led 7-2 after one inning.

Then in the fifth inning there was a 90-minute rain delay. It was a tough one to get through. But if you stuck it out, it was well worth it. Trailing by four runs entering the ninth inning, the Angels scored seven runs to stun the Yankees and take home the 11-8 victory.

Taylor Ward, Max Stassi and Anthony Rendon all reached with a walk in the ninth inning. Juan Lagares flew out, so the bases were loaded with one out when Jared Walsh stepped up to the plate.

On the second pitch he saw, Walsh crushed one off Aroldis Chapman and sent it into the bleachers, tying the game at eight. For Walsh, it was his second of the night and is 20th already on the young season. What a night for him. Easily the biggest home run of his career.

After the heroics from Walsh to tie the game, the Angels didn’t just stop there. They had two more runners reach base and had runners on the corners with two outs. On a 2-2 pitch, Luis Rengifo singled in both runs to give the Angels the 10-8 lead. Taylor Ward then followed with a double to put the Angels up three runs. The Halos scored seven runs in the ninth after the Yankees scored seven runs in the first inning earlier in the game.

It was the first time in MLB history that a team scored seven runs in the ninth to win a game after the opposing team scored seven runs in the first inning. Crazy, wild and insane stat, but we witnessed something that had never been done before last night.

Raisel Iglesias took the ninth and threw a 1-2-3 inning to secure the save. Last night was by far the biggest win of the season for the Angels. A win like that can definitely spark momentum in the clubhouse, something of which this team desperately needs. A comeback like that could instantly fire up this team and motivate them for the second half of the year.

With their game being rained out on Thursday, the Angels will head back to Anaheim for a three-game series against the Orioles. As of right now, the Halos are 8.5 games back of first place for the division and 7.5 games back of the Wild Card. Lots of time left to make a run, especially with how many games against AL West opponents they have in the month of July.

For now, take the day and just soak in last night’s insane victory. It’s definitely unlike one we’ll ever see again.
