Syracuse, N.Y. – It’s a Thanksgiving Day edition of Mike’s Mailbox.
It’s been a tough year, but one of the things I’m most thankful for is all of the readers, especially those who often send in questions for me to use in the weekly Mailbox.
Between the end of last season and the beginning of the 2020-21 season, the Mailbox never missed a week.
So before we all get to the turkey and stuffing, let’s get to those questions!
Q: Is Syracuse still trying to set up some more non-conference games for the basketball team?
Dennis M.
Mike: What to know about much the coronavirus has impacting college basketball teams’ schedules this fall? I had written one answer to this question on Wednesday morning and by Wednesday afternoon the answer was obsolete.
Just after noon on Wednesday, Syracuse announced that it would play Niagara in a non-conference game at the Carrier Dome on Dec. 3.
The game with Niagara looks to have been scheduled as a replacement for a game with Binghamton. The Orange’s game against Binghamton was never officially announced by Syracuse, but had been confirmed by Binghamton. However, Binghamton has had to cancel some early games due to positive Covid tests within its program.
In making the announcement of the game with Niagara, SU officials indicated that this was the final game to be added to the schedule.
That leaves Syracuse with non-conference games against Bryant (Nov. 27), Niagara (Dec. 3), Rider (Dec. 5), at Rutgers (Dec. 8), Buffalo (Dec. 19) and Georgetown (9).
Q: Haves two sons ever played for their dad at the same time on a Division I basketball team?
Orange Faithful on Twitter
Mike: I see this as a very passive-aggressive way to keep alive the streak of consecutive weeks with a question relating in part to Jimmy Boeheim.
I don’t have official records on sons playing for their dads, but should Jimmy and his younger brother Buddy wind up playing for their father at Syracuse, the Boeheim family would join a very select group.
I could find just four instances where two sons played for their father at the same time.
They are: Sean and Scott Sutton playing for their father, Eddie, at Oklahoma State; Franklin and Malcolm Porter playing for coach Terry at Portland; Andy and Bryan Hipsher playing for Dan at Akron and Logan and Lucas Nett playing for Dickey at Southeast Missouri State.
The key to this list is the phrase “at the same time.’'
That eliminates several father-son-son combinations, including Jimmy and Billy Baron, who both played for their dad Jim Baron at Rhode Island, but weren’t on the same teams. Same with Davidson coach Bob McKillop and his sons Matt and Brendan.
Then you have coaches who had sons play for them at two different schools like Tubby Smith with G.G. (Georgia) and Saul (Kentucky) and Jim Larranaga with Jon (George Mason) and Jay (Bowling Green).
Q: What are the chances now of Syracuse traveling again to an early season tournament in Maui or Atlantis?
Ray
Mike: Syracuse has been a frequent participant in early season tournaments like the Maui Invitational, the Great Alaska Shootout and the Battle 4 Atlantis.
Syracuse is slated to be in next year’s field for the Battle 4 Atlantis. The Orange last played in the event in the Bahamas in the 2015-16 season.
Hopefully, the coronavirus will be under control by November of next year and Syracuse will be able to return to the Bahamas.
Q: What is your favorite meat to use in your chili?
William R.
Mike: A few weeks ago I mentioned my award-winning secret chili recipe. OK, it’s never won an award and it’s not really a secret.
But here’s one thing I do. I use two pounds of ground beef and one pound of Italian sausage.
I like to use the hot sausage. It adds a kick without being overwhelmingly spicy.
Give a try the next time you’re in the kitchen.
