According to the Minnesota Department of Health, there were a total of 5,552 cases in the state in the Friday report, including 5,339 confirmed cases and 213 probable cases.
On Thursday the state reported a single-day record of 7,228 cases.
Locally, Kandiyohi County reported 54 confirmed cases, Meeker County had 25 and Pope and Redwood counties each had 14 cases and Renville County had 12.
Other area counties had single-digit cases including seven in Big Stone County, eight in Chippewa, Lac qui Parle and Yellow Medicine counties and five in Swift County.
Stearns County has consistently had the largest number of cases in this region with 331 positive cases and nine probable cases reported Friday. The high number may be linked to a report that about half of the inmates in the state prison there have been infected.
The state’s new cumulative number of cases is 207,339, with 17,084 being health care workers.
The Minnesota Department of Health reports how many cases are classified as “confirmed” through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing and how many cases are deemed “probable” through antigen testing.
There were 46 deaths related to COVID. The only death in this region was in Stearns County, which involved an individual in the 85-89 age range.
The current total for the state is 2,839, with 2,802 deaths from confirmed COVID cases and 37 from probable cases.
Most of the deaths, 1,954, have occurred in long-term care or assisted living facilities, and 2,304 of the people who died were 70 or older.
The Minnesota Department of Health is also reporting that 161,756 of the state's reported positive cases no longer need to self-isolate.
So far in Minnesota, there have been approximately 3,304,436 completed tests, including 3,251,551 PCR tests and 52,885 antigen tests. And approximately 2,093,262 people have been tested since Jan. 20.
