STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton rounded out its 2022 recruiting class with the addition of a four-year NCAA Division I starter to its frontcourt, as the program announced the signing of Incarnate Word graduate transfer Starr Omozee on Tuesday.
Omozee made 39 starts at forward for the Cardinals from 2018-2022. She averaged 6.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per contest and amassed five double-doubles over her four-year run in San Antonio. The 5-10 forward was the Cardinals' top rebounder her freshman and junior seasons and ranked among the leaders on the glass in the Southland Conference throughout her tenure at UIW.
"We're thrilled to finish our recruiting class off with a kid like Starr," head coach Misty Wilson said. "She's a high character individual that performed well in the classroom and on the court in her four years at UIW. Starr has played in more Division 1 games than anyone on our roster. That experience, along with her versatility at the forward position, will be invaluable for us next season. Starr has shown the ability on defense to guard multiple positions and rebound at a high level. Offensively she facilitates at the forward position and can score in a variety of ways. I'm excited to see the impact Starr will have on our program and university."
The Pflugerville, Texas native brings invaluable D1 postseason experience with her to the Cowboy Capital. Omozee helped UIW win its first-ever Southland Conference Tournament Championship and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in March.
She appeared in 21 games and earned seven starts over the course of UIW's run to the Big Dance in 2021-22.
Omozee was the Cardinals' top playmaker at forward as a junior during the COVID-condensed 2020-21 season. She averaged 8.8 points per outing on the strength of a team-high 46 percent clip from the field. Omozee snagged a team-best 5.9 rebounds per game and ranked ninth in the Southland Conference in offensive rebounds per game (2.5) and 17th among her conference peers in rebounds per game.
Her junior year featured a number of notable performances. Omozee scored in double figures on six occasions. She tallied 15 points and notched a career-high five steals at UTEP on Nov. 28, 2020. Omozee followed up the effort by scoring a season-high 16 points five days later to lead UIW to its first victory in program history over regional rival UTSA. She secured her fifth career double-double with an 11-point, 10-rebound effort in a 66-47 win over McNeese State on Feb. 8, 2021 and capped her third season in the Alamo City by snagging 10 rebounds in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament.
As a sophomore, Omozee averaged 4.6 points and 3.7 rebounds per game across 27 games played.
Omozee's freshman campaign was arguably her most memorable. She made 16 starts in 23 appearances and posted a stat line of 8.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and one steal per game. Omozee led the Cardinals in rebounding and double-doubles (four) and ranked second on the squad in scoring. She posted 10 double-digit scoring games, including a career-best 19-point effort as a part of a double-double vs. Houston on Nov. 16, 2018. Her first career double-double arrived in the form of a career-high 15-rebound, 11-point performance vs. Grand Canyon in just her second collegiate contest.
She made the short move south to San Antonio following a sensational prep career at Pflugerville High School. Omozee averaged 11.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.5 steals and one block per game as a senior en route to district defensive MVP and TGSA All-State accolades. She led the Panthers to three consecutive district championships on the hardwood while earning all-district honors in volleyball and track as well.
Omozee becomes the second member of her extended family to suit up at Wisdom Gym. Her cousin, Nosa Ebonwonyi, played four years for Tarleton men's basketball under former head coach and current vice president for intercollegiate athletics Lonn Reisman.
She comes from a rich basketball lineage. Omozee's sister, Diana, played four years at Oklahoma State. Her two cousins, Nneka Enemkpali and Adesuwa Ebomwonyi, enjoyed collegiate careers at Texas and Tulane, respectively. Enemkpali is currently an assistant basketball coach at USC.
Omozee also excels in the classroom. She completed her Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry on the pre-pharmacy track at UIW in May. Omozee received Academic All-District honors all four years at Pflugerville HS.
She intends to pursue a master's degree in human resource management at Tarleton.
