As every Chicagoan knows and obeys, the Church of England insists we take down Christmas decorations on Twelfth Night — which was either January 5 or 6, depending on whether you started counting on Christmas Day or the morning after. A lot of traditional Catholics say that January 7 (the day after the Epiphany) is the correct day for tree removal. Either way, Chicago, we’re all in compliance, right? You didn’t hear this from me, but according to lore, leaving a Christmas tree up after Twelfth Night means bad luck for the rest of the year. Which is why I’m screwed. My Christmas tree is still standing, and yes, it’s artificial, but no, our household has made no movements toward taking it down. I tried explaining the bad luck thing to my 4-year-old, but I lost her at Church of England — she wants it up until her birthday, in mid-September.
