ARLINGTON, Texas – The Oklahoma baseball team scored six runs in the fourth inning and limited UT Arlington to just one run on six hits in a 7-1 victory Wednesday night at Globe Life Field.
The Sooners (2-2) sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth, stringing together eight hits to emphatically break a scoreless tie. Designated hitter Logan Kohler doubled in two runs while center fielder Tanner Tredaway, first baseman Tyler Hardman, left fielder Diego Muniz and shortstop Brandon Zaragoza all contributed RBI singles. Catcher Jimmy Crooks homered for the second straight night, and his solo shot in the seventh made it 7-1.
"I think this was our first complete game all year. We played really well in all facets of the game," Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. "When we got the rally going, hitting with two strikes was really a key. I think there were five (two-strike) hits in there."
Braden Carmichael (1-0) pitched 4.0 scoreless innings in his first start at OU. He struck out five and worked around three hits and three walks. Ben Abram allowed a run on two hits with two strikeouts in 2.0 frames and Carson Carter tossed two scoreless innings with just one hit. Jason Ruffcorn pitched the ninth and induced a double play to end the game.
"Braden set the tone," Johnson said. "He went out there and just grinded with what he does. Seeing Ben get back on the mound was good, he and Carter (pitched well). We had to get Jason some work, just for the weekend. I thought it was a complete game all around, our poise and everything was really good."
Oklahoma broke open in the fourth, starting the inning with four straight singles including RBIs by Tredaway and Hardman. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, Kohler doubled down the right field line to make it 4-0. Muniz and Zaragoza followed with RBI base hits to extend the lead to 6-0.
After UT Arlington scored a run on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the sixth, Crooks gave OU the run back with his second home run of the season. Just as he did Tuesday night, Crooks turned on a pitched and deposited it halfway up the seats in right field.
Third baseman Peyton Graham went 3 for 5 and scored a run, batting in the leadoff spot for the first time. Crooks had two hits, including a single in the fourth. Abram and Ruffcorn each made their first appearances of the season on the mound.
The Sooners will stay in Texas for the Round Rock Classic this weekend at Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas. OU will face Auburn at noon Friday, Texas A&M at 6 p.m. Saturday and Baylor at 5 p.m. Sunday.
"You're looking at three really good teams. Auburn, A&M and Baylor are very well coached," Johnson said. "I think the biggest thing for us is we just have to keep getting in the rhythm of the game. We had a really good rhythm tonight. It was great to see it. From the first pitch, and even after we scored the runs, there were some quality at bats. Our guys have to continue to just not give at bats away and be attentive on first pitches and their first step on playing defense."
