A liner at the town’s wastewater treatment plant has been replaced and is back in operation.
Destroyed by Hurricane Matthew, the 5-million gallon storage lagoon is being filled again as needed. When additional untreated sewage flows to the treatment plant, it can be directed to the holding pond.
Jammie Royall, interim town manager, said the holding pond should reduce the amount of sewage spills. When the pond was not in use, excess sewage spilled over into the plant and the head waters of the nearby Northeast Cape Fear River.
The project carried a $650,000 price tag.
Opening bids will be taken Oct. 28 for the $5.5 million plant job that includes removal of a 300-acre tree farm, which will be replaced with a Bermuda grass crop.
Royall said the project should begin in early 2021 and conclude within a year.
The moratorium from completion of the lagoon should be lifted at that time.
