The Weems Road Pedestrian and Street Safety (PASS) project is now open to traffic.
The second of the two-part Weems Road project was recently completed on the south side of Mahan Drive after a year of construction.
City commissioners and staff held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday morning near the Eliza Road roundabout, officially opening the thoroughfare to traffic.
The PASS project includes a 12-foot-wide multi-use trail on the east side of the road for pedestrians and cyclists and a sidewalk on the west side.
"The new roundabout located at Weems Road and Dartmouth Drive will help improve traffic flow, particularly for residents in the Weems Plantation neighborhood, the city said in a news release. "Construction of a new bridge will help alleviate flooding that has historically occurred in the area."
On the north side of Mahan, the Weems Road extension that connects to Capital Circle Northeast, opened last month. That portion of the project came drew opposition from some in the environmental community.
The city noted that the Weems Road extension is designed to provide an alternative route at Capital Circle and Mahan Drive, one of Tallahassee's busiest intersections. It includes a 10-foot-wide multi-use trail.
"Combined, these projects represent an investment of more than $20 million by the city of Tallahassee to build connections, enhance mobility, provide quality infrastructure and ultimately strengthen the community," the city said.
