We still have six more weeks until the fall equinox - WQOW TV News 18

There remains plenty of time for summer weather and plenty of late sunsets. Tonight's sunset is at 8:17 p.m. and Eau Claire still has 11 more days until our first sunset before 8 p.m. Still, Eau Claire's average highs stay above 75 degrees through the first week of September and the average last 80 degree high doesn't occur until September 28.

Even at the fall equinox a full, long six weeks from now the sun will still be setting well after 7 p.m and it will stay that way until September 24, which is still 44 days away.

As summer continues, Eau Claire and a good portion of Wisconsin are running over an inch precipitation deficit for August not even halfway through the month. Minneapolis is above average only because of the heavy rain and flash flooding yesterday morning that surrounding rural areas didn't get, and otherwise have been extremely dry, too.

The Chippewa Valley Regional Airport, Eau Claire's official precipitation reporting weather station, has only picked up 0.38” of rain this month. 0.33” of that came this past weekend in which the rainfall was even more isolated than it tends to be in a normal August. On the south side of the city, our rain gauge has only measured 0.09” this month.

While we're still running surpluses for summer (meteorologically that means since June 1) and the year, those deficits are waning.

While we didn't get rain today, it was quite an awesome August day. Highs climbed into the mid 80s but we weren't humid as dew points stayed in the 50s, though they look to slowly climb towards 60 overnight and surpass 60 during the day tomorrow when humidity returns.

Despite the added moisture in the air, meaningful rain chances still look slim through the rest of the week. There's a slight chance for light rain tomorrow afternoon, but best chances look to be scattered showers or brief storms overnight and on and off through Friday.

Even with the possibility for rain each day through the end of the weekend, rain totals do not look to be all that impressive. Isolated locations could receive up to an inch or so, but most spots will likely be stuck with just a few more hundredths of an inch by the end of Friday.

Saturday looks a bit better with scattered showers and possibly storms moving through. Another quarter inch to a half inch are possible with isolated inch totals, but again most see the lower end of that range.

Humidity drops again following Saturday's cold front passage, and showers should be out early Sunday morning. Next week looks to be cool and mild with below average temps and low humidity.
