EAST MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) - A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday for a multi-use bridge over the Winooski River between East Montpelier and Berlin.
The 200-foot long bridge is being pushed by the group Cross Vermont Trail. They got a large federal highway grant years ago, but it only covered 80% of the project. Since then, board members have been working to raise the rest of the money. The bridge will provide safe travel separated from busy Route 2, and access to conserved natural areas along the river.
Organizers say they hope to eventually have the Cross Vermont Trail span the entire width of the state. They’ve already completed about 30 of the 90-mile route that includes trails, bike paths, and scenic views following the Wells River near Groton State Forest and the Winooski River over to Lake Champlain.
