WESTLAKE, Ohio -- The long-awaited new senior center in Westlake is moving toward possible completion in the first quarter of 2021.

Jim Smolik, a civil engineer for the City of Westlake, said: “The projected completion date is early winter in 2021. Inside, we have started some interior finishing and we are working on the HVAC, plumbing and electrical.”

All involved with the senior center will bask in the large space -- 28,000 square feet -- at its new location next to the city’s recreation center, which sits on a total of about 80 acres. The current center has been getting more cramped as time has gone by.

The new center will be more suitable to the growing senior community and the many activities and services provided by the Community Services Department. Senior Center and Community Services Director Lydia Gadd said, “We are excited to be in the process of planning our new senior and community services building, with the intent to remain ahead of the curve in providing a place that is a vibrant community focal point.”

Most of the site was formerly woods, said Smolik.

“It was an undeveloped area and also the former location of the tennis courts. In the area will be bocce ball courts, some additional trails that will tie into the existing trail system, and pickleball courts. We will be taking the trail around the building and parking lot to add to multiple access points already in the park for the trails,” he said.

An alternate location for the tennis courts has not been decided yet.

“What makes this building unique is the serenity garden in the middle and the unique masonry pattern around the building,” said Smolik. “With the brick, it is the way the brick is laid -- standing straight up, but at angles. The design pulls toward you.”

Smolik also emphasized that an abundance of glass and natural lighting will be featured in the center part of the building.

“That center part is the main part of the circulating crowds coming through,” he said. “The biggest thing is the masonry, the glass and the ‘serenity garden’ in the courtyard. It is surrounded by glass.”

The serenity garden is not fully developed yet, Smolik said. “So far, there are possible plans for some stamped concrete and some seating in the middle.”

“Softscaping” as he described the outside area, is “up in the air.”

And all those who will work in or use the beautiful new center will surely be “flying high.”
