Emmys 2020: Schitt’s Creek Makes Emmy History With Complete Sweep - Vanity Fair

The night belonged to the Pop TV sitcom, which neatly swept seven categories—making it the most awarded comedy in a single year.

Moira’s favorite season is awards for a reason. On Sunday night Schitt’s Creek won all seven comedy categories at the main Emmy ceremony, picking up statuettes for key categories including best lead actor, best lead actress, and best comedy. It was a clean sweep for the series, and a historic one at that. Schitt’s broke a slew of records by becoming the first comedy to win all four main acting awards in one year, and also became the most awarded comedy in a single year, according to Gold Derby.

“The internet’s about to turn on me. I’m so sorry!” Dan Levy declared after his third win, delivering a breathless thank-you speech at the private Toronto venue the Schitt’s cast and crew used for a private Emmy watch party in spite of this year. The cast, including winners Catherine O’Hara, Annie Murphy, Eugene Levy, and director Andrew Cividino, opted to be together on the socially distant big night, though the majority of this year’s nominees “attended” live from their respective homes.

Schitt’s picked up nine statuettes overall, breaking a record previously set by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which became the most awarded comedy in a single year with its eight wins in 2019; those wins included Creative Arts Emmys. Per Gold Derby, no comedy prior to Schitt’s Creek had won all seven comedy categories at the main ceremony. The show is also reportedly the first comedy to win all four comedy-acting categories in a single year, per AwardsWatch

“Please go out and vote,” Dan, the show’s cocreator (and director, writer, producer, and star) said while delivering the speech for the show’s best-comedy win. “I’m so sorry to make this political,” he added, turning to Eugene. “Dad, come and do the fun stuff.”

Eugene quickly took the mic, pivoting to thanking his multitalented son who brought the hilarious series to life. “I also want to thank once again this young man who took our fish-out-of-water story about the Rose family and transformed it into a celebration of inclusivity, a castigation of homophobia, and a declaration of the power of love.”

After their sweep the cast went to the virtual press room, where Dan called the historic wins “absolutely incredible…I think my dad said it best...that it feels like a dream that you don’t want to wake up from, to be perfectly honest.”

“What an absolutely wonderful way to end our series,” he added. “I don’t think you could ask for a better conclusion to a story than [this] tonight. So we are thrilled.”

Dan also addressed fans who have been hoping for a Schitt’s Creek follow-up movie. Though he didn’t rule out the possibility entirely, he did note that the Emmy sweep made a movie less likely.

“Here’s the thing…this is the best way we could have ever ended the show,” he said. “So if there is an idea that ever pops into my head, worthy of these wonderful people, it has to be really freaking good at this point…because this was a really nice way of saying goodbye…so fingers crossed that we get a really good idea that comes into our head.”
