Work is wrapping up on the major road improvement project on state Route 36, at Buck Mountain, near Dinsmore. That’s the word from Doug Hecox, spokesman for the Federal Highway Administration in Washington, D.C. The current estimate for the completion of the project is this fall or winter.
“The specific date is not easy to pin down yet, due to a variety of unforeseeable issues (such as landslides) that added to the time needed for project completion,” Hecox said in an email.
“The goal is to complete the project by the end of the construction season,” echoed Mark Benzinger, project manager with Mercer-Fraser Company. “We are optimistic we can complete the project this year. That is our goal and the goal of the Federal Highway Administration.”
Earlier this year, when construction work began in the third year of the project, two daily four-hour road closures were in place, from 8 a.m. to noon, and then from 1 to 5 p.m. Last month, those two four-hour closures were eliminated, and now motorists can expect delays of 30 minutes.
Benzinger is hopeful that the 30-minute delays can remain in place until the project is complete, but that could change if some of the work needed would require longer closures.
Benzinger said the landslide issues mentioned by Hecox are located in the eastern section of the almost 4.5-mile-long improvement project. The plans for landslide remediation are being developed and are expected to be completed soon.
Current work underway includes wall construction, erosion control, grading, driveways, and piping. “We are finishing all that needs to be done in advance of paving,” Benzinger said. He said it is likely that the paving will be broken into segments where some areas are paved and other areas that still have construction work taking place will be paved later. Paving is expected to begin in mid to late September.
Once the project is complete, state Route 36 will be realigned and widened to two, 12-foot wide travel lanes with 4-foot-wide paved shoulders.
“When completed, the project will enhance traffic safety and improve traffic flow along SR-36,” Hecox said. “The project is needed to improve the narrow roadway which, until now, had no shoulders or centerline stripe.” He said there were also a number of tight curves, steep grades, limited sight distance, geologic hazards, and other safety issues that this project will correct.
Work on this project began in the summer of 2017. It is a collaboration between the Federal Highway Administration Central Forest Lands Highway Division, Caltrans, and the Six Rivers National Forest.
