With less than 1,800 customers still without power Wednesday morning, Eversource crews are still working to restore outages from Tropical Storm Isaias.

A week after the storm, Eversource met its goal of “substantially restoring” power to 99 percent of its customers by midnight Tuesday.

While Eversource crews continue to push ahead, United Illuminating already reached its goal of restoring power to 99 percent of its customers by midnight Monday. UI’s 17-town service area in New Haven and Fairfield counties has 337,496 customers.

As of 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, 925 UI customers were without power in Fairfield. An hour later, the Fairfield outages were reduced to 35.

Eversource had 1,728 outages remaining as of 6 a.m. Wednesday, representing 0.13 percent of its more than 1.2 million customers.

Eversource’s territory includes 149 of the state’s 169 municipalities. A listing of estimated restoration times can be found at eversource.com.

Communities with the highest number of outages include Danbury (261), Norwalk (170), Stamford (132), Greenwich (123), Westport (98), Wilton (71), Ridgefield (65), New Milford (64), New Canaan (60) and Monroe (58).

“We’ll keep working until all of the communities we serve are fully restored, and we’re grateful for their continued patience,” Eversource tweeted.

Craig Hallstrom, Eversource’s president of regional electric operations, said at this point in the restoration efforts, final outages often call for time-consuming, extensive repairs.

“For example, we can have five or more crews — which can be about 18 people — working most of the day to repair the damage at one location and that will bring power back to only one customer,” Hallstorm said.

He said the damaged caused by Tropical Storm Isaias “rivals — and in many cases surpasses — the destruction caused by other recent historic storms.”

During Isaias, more than 20,000 spots across the state saw damage, compared with 16,101 during Tropical Storm Irene and 16,460 during Superstorm Sandy.

Eversource said it reached peak outages for Isaias — 632,632 customers — 3:30 p.m. Aug. 5, about 24 hours after the storm hit. Peak outages reached 671,000 Eversource customers during Irene, while less than 500,000 of the utility service’s customers were without power during Sandy’s peak, according to Eversource.
