More than 50,000 New Jersey homes and businesses remained without power Saturday night, four days after Tropical Storm Isaias felled trees that knocked out power lines up and down the Garden State.
Statewide, 1.4 million homes and businesses initially lost power as a result of the fast-moving storm, with electricity gradually restored by the state’s four utilities, none of which had restored power to all of its customers as of late Saturday night.
During his daily coronavirus press briefing on Friday, when more than 300,000 customers were still without power, Gov. Phil Murphy acknowledged his own and others’ frustration over the prolonged outages. Murphy promised “a full after-action postmortem” on the utilities’ efforts to restore power, despite crews having been called in from several other states to help clear trees and replace lines.
More than 52,000 customers remained without power among New Jersey’s four electric companies as of 10 p.m. Saturday, according to figures posted by the companies.
More than half of them were customers of Jersey Central Power & Light, which was singled out for criticism by Murphy for its slow pace of restoration. As of 10 p.m., JCP&L was reporting that 29,257 of its 1.1 million customers were still without power. Heavily wooded Morris County remained the hardest hit region of JCP&L’s scattered service area, with more than 10,000 customers still out of power Saturday night.
PSE&G reported 19,502 of its 2.3 million customers were still in the dark — barring candle power or emergency generators — on a diagonal swath cutting across the state from Bergen down through Camden County.
And Orange & Rockland Utilities said 3,362 customers were still without power among its 71,983 New Jersey customers in Bergen and Passaic counties, near the New York State border.
Atlantic City Electric reported lingering outages for just 565 of its 545,636 customers at the bottom end of the state.
